Codex on Flight, folios 11v, 16v, 17r, 17v

Great Kite

It is the most technically advanced flying machine Leonardo ever imagined. In his manuscripts, the Genius does not describe only the design, but clearly explains how the machine should be maneuvered.

This machine reached a wingspan of about 30 "braccia", equal approximately to 18 meters. The large wings engaged the sides of the cockpit, which housed the pilot in an upright position, while seated on a stool.
Leonardo, at this stage of his studies, was well aware that human muscular power is both insufficient and poorly suited for the typical flapping flight of small birds. In fact, the Great Kite imitates the gliding flight of large birds. Leonardo strongly believed in this project and dreamed of having this flying machine fly through the skies.
