An exhibition at Leonardo3 Museum from 15 November 2024 to 15 February 2025.

The horse, the mazzocchio and the Master's image

2024-10-22

An unmissable event. For the first time, the original drawing of Leonardo's mazzocchio, beside the object he had conceived but perhaps never built, is displayed. The project of the Sforza Monument, to which the museum devotes several reconstructions, is evoked by one of its original studies. The exhibition culminates with the most faithful of Leonardo’s portraits.

Milanese drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and Francesco Melzi
For the first time in the 11 years since its opening, the Leonardo3 Museum exhibits three drawings from the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana, two by the Maestro and one by his most trusted pupil, Francesco Melzi.

Under the authoritative direction of Professor Martin Kemp and the patronage of the Nuova Fondazione Rossana e Carlo Pedretti, the exhibition aims to highlight the close and synergistic relationship between the Master and his legacy in Milan, thus underlining the indissoluble link with the city that has always been part of the Museum’s identity and mission.
The works on display
The horse dates from the most advanced stage of the studies for the equestrian monument to the memory of Francesco Sforza, to which Leonardo promised to devote himself as soon as he arrived in Milan.
The Mazzocchio testifies to the desire to bring the ideal perspective exercise back from theory to practice. The original drawing is put side by side with the physical reconstruction of the object.
The Master's image, realised with subtlety in faithful imitation of Leonardo's technique, is believed to be in the hand of his most trusted disciple Francesco Melzi.
